Cult internet makeup brand morphs into first San Antonio brick-and-mortar - culturemap.com Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:57 PM PDT While once-mighty chains are crumbling under the nation's continuing retail apocalypse, a cult internet beauty brand is making a major push into brick-and-mortar. An employee has confirmed that Morphe opened its first San Antonio shop inside North Star Mall on Saturday, August 3. Founded in 2008 by siblings Chris and Linda Tawil, the San Francisco company initially made a name for itself with affordable makeup brushes. Although Morphe now has distribution deals with Ulta Beauty in the U.S. and Sephora in Canada, its early growth was largely founded on a direct-to-customer model. Morphe was an early beauty industry social media adopter. Its Instagram account, currently hovering at 9.7 million followers, frequently showcases outré makeup looks from its community of MUAs (makeup artists) it tags as #Morphebabes. As part of that strategy, Morphe works primarily with beauty YouTubers and influencers both in marketing campaigns and in developing product. Some of the biggest names in the industry, including James Charles, Jaclyn Hill, and Jeffree Star have created palettes and other products for the company. Of course, with influencers comes influencer drama. Most notably, Hill was accused of knowingly selling faulty products through her 2018 collaboration with Morphe. The company has also been on the edges of other YouTube controversies, including the "dramageddon" between Star, Laura Lee, Manny MUA, and Gabriel Zamora. In that debacle, Lee was dropped by the company when racially charged tweets were uncovered in 2012. Star, who also has a well-documented history of using racist language, continues to be one of Morphe's marquees faces. Still, for San Antonians who keep their beauty drama to a smokey lid, the store should be a hit. The line is as heavily pigmented as upscale lines like Smashbox and Urban Decay but sold at a fraction of the price. |

Awash In 'Millennial Pink,' Glossier Pops Up In Boston - WBUR Posted: 07 Aug 2019 11:23 AM PDT Glossier, the makeup and skincare brand adored by Instagramming millennials and celebrities like Beyoncé and Michelle Obama, opened its first (temporary) Boston location in the Seaport on Wednesday. The company was founded in 2014 by entrepreneur Emily Weiss, who also started makeup review site IntoTheGloss.com. Glossier touts itself as makeup and skincare designed by and for their customers. Initially, the products were only available online; they are now available in-person at permanent stores in New York City and Los Angeles, and at pop-ups like Boston. The shop, which takes up all of the space of The Current, a retail space designed for temporary stores, is outfitted in so-called "millennial pink," as are the store employees. All of the company's products are available at the pop-up shop, said a spokesperson for Glossier. Unlike the online store, the "offline experiences...are designed to be a pinnacle of engagement for our community and an immersive embodiment of Glossier in real life." The layout and interiors of the shops — products are segmented into several "houses" — are perfect for posting to social media. The company prides itself on its large social media following, saying it has 2.2 million followers on Instagram. Fresh and fake flowers abound and mirrors with bright, flattering lights show customers how that lipstick or eyeliner looks. You can buy official Boston Glossier swag, anywhere from $5 for an enamel pin to $25 for a baseball hat. And no millennial-focused brand would be complete without a selfie room — in this case, one with a giant Glossier "G" logo to pose in. Boston is the company's third pop-up location to open in 2019; previously the company had temporary stores in Miami and Seattle, which have since closed. A statement from Glossier said they will be donating to BAGLY, the Boston Alliance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Youth. The company will fund a year's worth of BAGLY's Family Dinners. The pop-up shop is located at 85 Northern Ave. in the Seaport and is open Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., until Oct. 4. |
Attention Beauty Lovers: The Birchbox Shop Just Arrived at Five New Walgreens Locations - Us Weekly Posted: 07 Aug 2019 02:36 PM PDT Birchbox and Walgreens teamed up with a mission to make you more excited about your next trip to the drugstore. And as of today, five more stores in the United States will be offering the fun, immersive experience in-store. The two brands teamed up to launch the Birchbox Shop in select Walgreens locations nationwide, starting with 11 locations in NYC, LA, Chicago and Minneapolis in 2018. They're expanding to add five more shops in California, Michigan and Illinois — so even more of you can get in on the fun! These in-store shops are different than the drugstore beauty section that you're used to. The shop is an entirely separate space devoted to discovering new beauty products (read: an escape from the hustle and bustle feel of the other aisles). There's fun wallpaper, photo-ops, vanity stations to get your glam on and framed Birchboxes as art. Since Birchbox is beloved for its affordable subscription box full of samples, these shops even feature a BYOB (Build Your Own Birchbox) section. There, you pick and choose five samples of makeup, skin and hair care products and bring 'em home in a cute, 'grammable box rather than a boring old shopping bag. The special shop features a curation of products from popular indie brands like Lipstick Queen, Sand & Sky, Laura Geller, RMS Beauty, Winky Lux and more. These aren't the brands that are normally lining the aisles of your local drugstore — but that aisle of the store does still exist if you're in desperate need of a different product.
