| Simone Rocha Spring/Summer 2019 Ready-To-Wear show report - Vogue.co.uk Posted: 16 Sep 2018 12:00 AM PDT  To paraphrase the Irish poet Paul Muldoon, a central tenet of the Irish imagination is concerned with the notion of exile and transit. People are always leaving Ireland physically, but coming back psychologically. Simone Rocha has traced her Dublin upbringing through her collections via baptismal gowns and communion dresses, crochet and tweed, Perry Ogden's Pony Kids, all of which have played a dramatic role in shaping her rich and strange seasonal collections. Perhaps unwilling to trade on the success of her father, John Rocha, she has largely left her Chinese heritage untapped. But, in recent months, she's been spending more time than usual with family and friends in Hong Kong, scouring markets for Chinese imitation paintings, watching people parade up and down the flashy streets and getting their nails done, analysing the sumptuous wardrobes of 16th century concubines, pinning Tang Dynasty hairstyles. All added up to a spring show that was as utterly majestic as it was wonderfully wearable - and it was her best collection yet. You only had to take a look at the shoes to see that this is a young designer with a graceful mastery over her pretty-tough aesthetic. Jewel-toned satin platforms, sling-backs and flat rubber jelly sandals sprouted feathers from their soles, and were bedecked with pearls and crystals. Also exquisite were her crystal-choked hair bands and clips, earrings and necklaces that graced the pretty satins and embroidered tulle (there's nary a self-respecting London party girl who doesn't have a pair of Rocha's pearl earrings or hair clips in her going-out arsenal). Elegant hats draped with lace veils inspired by the Tang Dynasty added to the stately atmosphere. "I wanted it to be joyful, and playful, and also to represent my family and friends. So many people who work at the brand are from China, Taiwan, and it's something I haven't fully explored before," she said, backstage. The Chinese deviation gave this collection an impressive depth. Despite all the crystals and the lace, the hats and the hair bands, the silhouettes felt more pared back than usual, less fussy. Content to let her fabrics delight, Rocha cut sumptuous jackets and dresses with ballooning sleeves but kept skirts straight and narrow, elegantly falling just below the knee. Three finale dress, strapless, with bubble hems, were truly stunning. An independent label run by a 32-year-old woman is something of an oddity in fashion, but this spectacle cemented Rocha's position as one of the most exciting young designers working today. |
